Chiang Khong overview

Chiang Khong is located in Chiang Rai, the northern Thailand, this is the location (border) you must pass through if you plan to travel to Laos by ferry. Chiang Khong is a small, peaceful town with a weekly Friday market, as well as numerous pagodas, temples, and a handicraft hamlet.

The best time to visit Chiang Khong

The best time for tourists to visit Chiang Khong is between October and January, or on April 18 when the catfish festival is held each year after the fish are caught in the Mekong River. You will have a great time and find this traditional celebration to be quite interesting.

How to travel to Chiang Khong?

You can take a minibus, sometimes known as a “green bus,” from Chiang Mai to Chiang Khong, or you can take the local bus from Chiang Rai to Chiang Khong. Every day, numerous buses from the major northern Thai city of Bangkok (Moh Chit) travel to Chiang Khong. These buses are available day and night and arrive at Chiang Khong. The daily bus leaves at 7 am and arrives in Chiang Khong at 8 pm, however, there is also a bus that runs continuously from 19 pm to 8 am the next day.

The ideal way for tourists to see everything Chiang Khong has to offer is by bike or by renting a motorbike and riding through the nearby villages and along the banks of the Mekong River. There are many traditional festivals held here, and the locals of Chiang Khong follow their own calendars. Chiang Khong has unique traits that reflect the cultures of Laos, Thailand, and many ethnic groups.
