Things to do in Phnom Penh
The Royal Palace, which was built on the site of the old town by King Norodom in 1866, and the Silver Pagoda, which is located within the grounds of the Royal Palace, are both must-sees. The Silver Pagoda is so named because of its floor, which is made up of 5000 silver tiles.
Your trip to Phnom Penh also should include the National Museum, which is one of Phnom Penh’s true architectural gems. With its warm red terracotta and a gracefully cured roof topped by dozens of guardian nagas, the Museum is instantly recognizable. The famed French architect Georges Groslier & Ecole Des Arts Cambodians designed it in Khmer style in 1917.
The infamous Killing Fields ” Choeung Ek” about 15 kilometers southwest of Phnom Penh should not be missed. This is the site of the brutal executions of over 17,000 people, the majority of whom were subjected to interrogations, torture, and deprivation in Toul Sleng Prison during the Pol Pot regime (From 1975–1979).
Your journey should include the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21 prison). This prison was a high school that was turned into a prison by Pol Pot’s security forces, and it became the largest center for detention and torture during the Khmer Rouge’s rule.
With travelers like shopping, the Russian Market (Psah Tuol Thom Pong) is a lively outdoor market where you will find everything such as antiquities, silver and gold jewelry, gems, silk, kramas, stone, and wood carvings, as well as T-Shirts, CDs, and other souvenirs. Then you should conclude your trip to the Victory Monument.
Phnom Penh’s food specialties
Phnom Penh is very known for its local, inexpensive food such as Bok Trop Pgnon (Pounded eggplant dip), Bai Sach Chrouk (Pork and rice), Nom Banh Chok (Khmer noodles), Kari Sach Moan (Chicken red curry), Kari Saraman (Beef Saraman curry), Kha Sach ko (Beef stewed in palm sugar), Sngor Chruak Sach Trei (Sour fish soup), to name a few.
These regional delicacies are not only delicious but also prepared in a unique manner compared to other cities. It’s an experience just to watch the locals cook using their own methods on the street.
