Long Neck Tribal Villages overview
Long Neck Tribal Villages fled from Myanmar (Burma) to Thailand to avoid war and violence in the late 1980s. These tribal villages are well-known for their women, who wear gold rings around their necks.
From the age of 5 to their 21st birthday, one ring is added to their collection each year. Their necks eventually grow so long that they are referred to as “dragon ladies” or simply “long necks.” According to Karen people, the longer the neck, the more beautiful the woman who wears it.
The best Long Neck Tribal Village must-see
Every Long Neck Tribal Village in Thailand has its own distinct look and feel, which is determined by factors such as size, location, and locale. Visiting Baan Huay Pu Keng village in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Rai, will provide you with the most authentic experience of the Kayan Long Neck tribe.
The village of Baan Huay Pu Keng is close to the Thai/Myanmar border, where they crossed from their homeland. This village is only accessible by long-tail boat across the Pai river for the majority of the year.
It is far more authentic than Long Neck villages further south, such as Pattaya, due to its proximity to their homeland and mountains. The Long Neck lives their normal lives here, and the village operates almost exactly like any other hill tribe village in Thailand. It has its own kindergarten, church, and daily activities. This is the closest thing visitors will find to a fully functional natural village.
Baan Huay Ser Tao is only a 30-minute drive from Mae Hong Son town on a sealed road, but it feels much more commercialized and like a tourist attraction than Baan Huay Pu Keng.
The best place to visit a Long Neck Tribal Village in Thailand is Bann Tong Luang Neck Tribal Village in Mae Rim, Chiang Mai, Thailand. Long Neck, Kyaw Big Ear, Karen, Hmong, Palong, Yao/Mien Lahu, and Lisu are among the hill tribes represented here, and it provides an excellent glimpse into a variety of hill tribes groups and traditional village life. It’s both entertaining and educational. The adult entrance fee to Baan Tong Luang village is 500bt.
