Angkor Thom Temple overview
Angkor Thom Temple is the Khmer Empire’s longest and final capital city. Jayavarman VII built this famous site at the end of the VII century.
Why visit Angkor Thom Temple?
Angkor Thom, which translates as “Great City” in English, was the ancient Khmer Empire’s longest-lasting capital. The walled city was the focal point of King Jayavarman VII’s massive construction program.
Angkor Thom was built in the late 12th century and covers an area of 9 square kilometers. In the 16th century, the city was abandoned.
Popular tourist attractions include the Bayon, Phimeanakas, and Baphuon temples.
This special citadel is 9km2 in size and contains many other citadels. This citadel also contains many citadels that were built during previous periods.
The citadel of Jayavarman is known as Bayon Temple and is located in the right center of this temple, and it was built as Jayavarman VII’s kingdom capital and was based on the Bayon style.
This place’s construction materials were made of laterite, which could be seen very clearly on the people’s faces and towers here, which are very big, impressive, special, and beautiful.
How to travel to the temple?
The temple is located on the Tonle Sap Lake’s shore. The south gate of this temple, which is very famous for its two lines of stone snakes, is only 7.2 kilometers away from Siem Reap City, making it very easy, fast, and convenient for tourists to explore the temple by bus, motorbike, or even bike from the center of Siem Reap.
Angkor Thom is a quick tuk-tuk ride from Angkor Wat (a tuk-tuk is one of the popular vehicles of locals in Cambodia). Most visitors enter the ancient city through the East or South Gates.
Many of the temples within Angkor Thom city, including Bayon, Baphuon, Phimeanakas, the Terrace of the Leper King, the Terrace of the Elephants, and the Royal Palace, are included in most Angkor Wat tours.
