Wat Phou – Located at the south of Laos, in Champasak Province near the Cambodian border.

The best way to see Wat Phou on a day trip is by motorbike, which can be rented in Pakse from 60,000 Kip per day.

The deliberately chosen location of Wat Phou in Laos along an east – west axis, is coupled with the fact that the peak of Phou Kao Mountain – Laos is shaped like a lingam.

The best time to visit Wat Phou is during the dry season from November to March, when temperatures are cooler.

If you spend a night or two in nearby Champasak town (10 km away), which I’d definitely recommend if you have the time, you can also reach Wat Phou by bicycle or by tuk tuk.

Wat Phou overview

Wat Phou is situated in the province of Champasak, beneath the Phou Khao mountain, about 6 kilometers from Pakse. It is still known as Wat Phu Temple was constructed by the Khmer people at the same time as Angkor Wat and My Son Holy Land in Vietnam, in the fifth century.

All of the structures in this area, which are made of both stone and brick, are intricately patterned and carved. In the mountainous area that is located behind Wat Phou Temple, there are numerous deity statuses that are still very much alive in Indian mythology.

Wat Phou is the most significant religious architecture complex of the Khmer Empire, even if it is only in ruins. This is evident from the remaining items.

Wat Phou is about 45km from Pakse, it takes about 55 mins by taxi or driving to drive from Pakse to Wat Phou. This is one of the most famous and popular tourist destinations in Pakse, Laos, it is also easy for you to reach here so you should not miss this unique site once visiting Laos.
