Thac Ba Lake overview
Thac Ba Lake is known in northwest Vietnam for its Thac Ba hydroelectric, which not only provides electricity for people’s daily lives but also creates man-made hydroelectric reservoirs of exceptional beauty.
Thac Ba Lake in Yen Bai Province northern Vietnam is an example of a magnificent diamond. This is a fantastic vacation for those who value the pristine beauty of Northwest nature.
Thac Ba Lake was created in 1970 by the construction of a hydroelectric dam in the districts of Yen Binh and Luc Yen in Yen Bai Province. The whole size of the lake is around 23,400 hectares, with a water surface area of 19,050 hectares.
The lake is 80 kilometers long, 20 to 29 meters deep, and has over 1,300 varying-size islets. There are amazing caverns and temples related to indigenous people’s long-standing legends on limestone mountains and islands.
Best Things to Do in Thac Ba Lake
By taking a boat ride around the islands, you will be able to enjoy the fresh air, cool breeze, and rich green forests intermingled with small islands – a beautiful vision of the fluvial space.
Humans will feel more at ease in this setting, particularly when they witness modest cottages snuggled into the cliffs. A spectacular assortment of stalactites, stalagmites, and wells emanate a breathtaking glow inside the caverns. They all work together to create a “stone stage” that is appealing enough to attract tourists.
The excursion also includes visits to well-known historical sites near the lake, such as Thac Ba Temple and Sao Pagoda. Visitors who visit and light an incense stick will feel at ease and in love with life.
In addition to enjoying the grandeur of the lake, you can tour the beautiful Cao Bien Linh Son Mountain Range. Nothing surpasses standing on the peak and watching the sunrise or sunset.
Furthermore, natural trees on the mountain will provide tourists with a true sense of the majesty of a location that combines the splendors of the Northwest Region and the North Midlands.
Many caverns on the limestone mountains, such as Thuy Tien, Xuan Long, Thac Ba, and Thac Ong Cave, are hundreds of years old and are related to legends. Climbing to the cave’s summit may glimpse the Chay River running along the hillside and towns with lush fields in the Yen Binh District.
Thac Ba is also a popular tourist destination, not only because of its gorgeous scenery, but also because of the cultural identity of the Tay, Nung, Cao Lan, and Dao peoples that dwell there.
The Chay River’s alluvium deposit has created rich communities around the lake, as well as a cultural community with distinct festivals and customs. Arriving at Thac Ba Lake, observing native life, and enjoying outstanding specialties produced from fresh fisheries (tortoise, hemizygous…) will be an unforgettable discovery for tourists.
With various high-quality tourism services of Hao Gia, Dong Tam, or Hanh Hoa Vien Hotel, this beautiful place may match the demand of all travelers for a holiday or vacation. You will never be sorry if you spend some time at Thac Ba Lake.
Because it is one of the three largest manufactured lakes and a potential ecotourism attraction, this area is viewed as Ha Long Bay in the mountains.
The pristine and gorgeous beauty of Thac Ba Lake usually lures travelers to come here and discover all the intriguing things. It is not an exaggeration to say that it is an ideal Northwest Upland destination for nature enthusiasts, particularly those interested in riverscapes.
Best time to visit Thac Ba Lake
You can visit the lake at any time of year because the climate has four distinct seasons and the temperature remains relatively stable. The month of January is suitable for festival-goers to enjoy Thac Ba Temple’s amazing celebration. Thac Ba Lake is also a great place to visit for a day trip or a weekend retreat.
How to travel to Thac Ba Lake?
It is easily accessible from Hanoi City, which is around 80 kilometers from the capital (along National Highway No. 2). It appears to be an interesting stop for visitors on their route to explore the northwest upland.
