Being a country of temples with unique architecture, Cambodia has becomes a tourist attraction for foreign visitors in recent years. Behind the outstanding architecture of palaces and temples are interesting stories. When walking and admiring each of structures, travelers can listen to its history and the formation process. Especially, in the journey to Cambodia, we cannot miss well-known landmarks like Angkor Complex or Bokor Plateau…There is still a place which is not very prominent but irresistible due to its historical values: Oudong Mountain.

Oudong or called Udong, Odongk, Oudong Meanchey is the former capital of Cambodia from the 17th century to 19th century. “Oudong” means noble and “Meanchey” means victory. This is the final capital before the Khmer Kingdom moved the capital to Phnom Penh. Despite being the ancient capital, Oudong does not have as many remnants as other ancient structures do in Cambodia. Not too far from Phnom Penh but Oudong seems to sink into oblivion and gradually is encroached by the forest.

Oudong Mountain was founded by King Srei Soryapor in 1601, located 35km northwest of the modern capital Phnom Penh. It takes tourists about 15- 20 minutes to take a taxi to Oudong. Or else you can choose travel by tuk tuk or rent a car. Now Oudong Mountain becomes a district of Kampong Speu Province in Cambodia.

In the past, Oudong Mountain is an important territory of the Kingdom of Cambodia. It used to be the Royal residence and Cambodia’s capital for more than 250 years. It has also a particularly strategic location in wars for the national independence. The architectural style of Oudong is not as sophisticated and eye-catching as that of other temples in Cambodia. It lies in a small corner of the large Phnom Penh and brings us the feeling of a forgotten capital. But it is great historical values that bring Oudong the new vitality. Not surprisingly, it has become a tourist spot with immense significance of history. Furthermore, the natural scenery in this place is also a new thing attracting tourists.

Almost all tourists coming here would like to know more about historical stories at war time of Cambodia. When it comes to Oudong Mountain, people often think of the Queen of Chan Lap – the woman made great contributions to protecting Cambodia in the past.

The reason why the architecture of Oudong Mountain was damaged is the war, more specifically bombs of the US imperialists. After a period of time, Oudong was officially restored, but some areas were mostly in ruins. It’s impossible to restore the whole old architecture. As a result, Oudong Mountain can’t keep the perfect beauty compared to that in the past.

It’s easy for us to see this unique architecture when we travel to Cambodia. Sometimes, humans must give a question that why predecessors can design and build such a wonderful construction. Currently, Oudong ancient capital is being renovated by the State with the aim of preserving a historical landmark, developing a distinctive feature of Cambodian tourism and bringing haunting historical stories of a country to travelers.

Visiting Oudong Mountain, you will see majestic nature and towering stupas. The mysteriousness and pristine beauty of an ancient capital, without doubt, will leave a strong impression on you or any other tourists. Nowadays, here are there still some religious relics which are on the nomination list of World Cultural Heritages of UNESCO. They include tombs of Khmer kings as well as religious artifacts with over 100 years of age. This destination is also very renowned with the big Buddha damaged in the fight with Khmer Rouge army.
