Take a Weekend Trip to Hon Ong Island, Khanh Hoa

Hon He, also known as Whale Island, is a small island located in Van Phong Bay of Van Ninh district, Khanh Hoa province, nearly 100km from Nha Trang. Hon Ong has an area of around 40,000 hectares, but only 2 ha are used in the construction of the resort, the rest is the forest which is green all year round.

How to go to Hon Ong Island

In order to reach Hon Ong, you have to travel by road to Dam Mon pier, Van Thanh, Van Ninh, Khanh Hoa. After arriving in Dam Mon pier, you contact the hotel reception for the boats and departure time for the island of Hon Ong.

You can go to Dam Mon pier by road from the city of Tuy Hoa – Phu Yen or from Nha Trang. Nha Trang is about 100 km Dam Mon wharf and it takes about 3 hours to travel from Nha Trang to Dam Mon. Going along Highway 1A to the north, through the district of Ninh Hoa and Van Gia town, tourists will reach Co Ma Pass. Before climbing the pass, you will see a signpost which guides you to right turn to Dam Mon. This turns is around 83km from Nha Trang and about 18km from Dam Mon wharf.

Travelling by motorbike

This way is suitable for men who are skillful motorcyclists and backpackers. Traveling by motorbike will takes you 2 days (both travel to return) and costs you about  230,000 VND for petrol. Motorbike rental fee is 2 200,000/ days.

If you are backpackers and have more time, you should choose motorcycle as the mean of travelling, because the road of 18km long from Co Ma pass to Dam Mon pier is very beautiful. This road is a truly coastal path. One side is highly untouched white sand, the other side is the blue sky, smooth paved road. In this path, you can enjoy the scenery while driving, you’ll pass through the beautiful winding tracks, interspersed with  the shrimp ponds, white sand beaches, the tiny sand dunes like the salt mines which has just been exploited. It is sure that every one driving motorcycles through this road will stop to take pictures because of the beautiful scenery along the road.

Travelling by passenger car combined with motorbike taxi, bus or taxi

You can go to Nha Trang bus station at 1, 2/4 Street, Nha Trang city to catch any one car going to the provinces to the north and get off along the road. The surest way is that you should stop at Dai Lanh town then catch a taxi or motorcycle taxi to Dam Mon pier. The distance from the town of Dai Lanh to Dam Mon pier is 23km. If you take a taxi or motorcycle taxi, make sure to ask the driver for their phone number to contact them to pick you up in the dock. Total travel time is about 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours.

Estimated cost for a passenger car is 100,000 VND, taxi fee from Dai Lanh to Dam Mon pier ( about 23km) is about 350,000 VND. If you take motorbike taxi, it is even much cheaper. Estimated cost for one person to go by this way (if travelling in group of 4) is about 400,000 VND /person for 2 ways.

If you travel in a group of at least 7 members, you should pick a taxi to go. The cost of a 7 seat cab for 100km distance is about 1.4 million VND, it means, each person will have to pay 200,000 VND.

Besides, you can also go to Dam Mon pier by another way which is to catch bus from Northern Nha Trang bus station, stop at Van Gia bus station in the town of Van Gia. In this bus station, there is buses going straightly from Van Gia to Dam Mon pier. There are 3 departures a day and the latest one departs at 10am.
