Thien Mu Pagoda overview

Thien Mu Pagoda was built in 1601 by Nguyen Hoang King and is located on the top of Ha Khe hill, on the left bank of the Perfume River. This pagoda is approximately 5 kilometers from the center of Hue.

Thien Mu Pagoda’s legend

According to legend, an old lady appeared in this area every night and said that in this place would appear a king who would come to build a pagoda to help the country grow stronger. Then, Nguyen Hoang King came here and saw that this is a very good location for a pagoda, so he named it Thien Mu, where “Thien” means God and “Mu” means an old lady.

Following that, under Tu Duc King, he changed the name from Thien Mu to Linh Mu Pagoda because he thought it would help him have a baby, but this change still did not help him have a baby, so people in this area are still known by the old name Thien Mu Pagoda, but many people call this pagoda Linh Mu Pagoda, so this pagoda has been known by two names, this pagoda is famous for its Phuoc Duyen tower, which is seven stories (floors) tall and 21 meters tall. This tower was built in 1844, and each of the towers is dedicated to the Buddha.

The pagoda is a large area with many trees and flowers that are cared for daily by the monks who live here. This is a well-known and beautiful highlight that you should see if you visit Hue.

How to travel to the pagoda?

There are two ways to get to the pagoda: take a boat along the pagoda and stop along the way, or take a bus from the center of Hue City to this pagoda, which is only 5 kilometers from the center of Hue City.
