Hue Imperial City is a walled fortress and palace in the city of Huế, the former imperial capital of Vietnam.

The grounds of the Hue Imperial City are protected by fortified ramparts 2 kilometers by 2 kilometers, and ringed by a moat.

The Hue Imperial City was oriented to face the Huong River to the east. This was different from the Forbidden City in Beijing, which faces south.

The Hue Imperial City, set up by Nguyen Dynasty from 1805 to 1945, is now one amongst the relics of the Hue ancient Capital – the World Cultural Heritage, capturing much of tourists’ attention.

This Hue Imperial City part was built with brick walls of 3.72m high, 0.72m thick, and about 1,230m in circumference.

The Nguyen Dynasty established the Hue Imperial City, also known as the Hue Imperial Citadel, from 1805 to 1945, and a UNESCO-designated world cultural heritage site in Hue’s ancient capital complex.

The site attracts a large number of tourists who visit this site daily, and it is also one of Hue’s most famous and popular attractions.

Hue Imperial City’s history

This ancient site has been surveyed by Gia Long Kinh since 1803, and construction on the imperial city complex began in 1805 and was completed in 1832 under Minh Mang Kinh. The Imperial City, Royal Citadel, and Purple Forbidden City are all part of this complex.

According to history, this is the most massive and largest project, with ten thousand people involved in its construction, and it lasted 30 years under two kings, Gia Long and Minh Mang.

Hue Imperial is very large, unique, and almost all architects and projects face south because the kings believe this is the best way to control the country.

How to travel to the Hue Imperial City?
