Notre Dame Cathedral Saigon was one of the city’s first Catholic churches, with the first churches arriving in Vietnam in the 16th century. Then, in response to the French army, churches, and Christian churches arose in the nineteenth century.

As soon as the French occupied Saigon – Gia Dinh for the second time in 1862, they built churches to celebrate for the Catholic faithful, with the goal of improving the city and developing Saigon to become Nam Ky’s metropolis. The first church was built on No. 05 Street, now known as Ngo Duc Ke Street, and was modeled after an old Vietnamese pagoda.

Admiral Bonard constructed a truly massive cathedral in 1863 to meet the growing demand for Christianity. This wooden structure, known as the Saigon Church, was completed in 1865. Because its material is only made of wood, its size is limited, and it was broken, a large church plan was started from that.

Notre Dame Cathedral Saigon is a unique architectural masterpiece that helped shape Saigon’s face. The structure also marked the beginning of the cultural and architectural exchange between the West and the East.
