Ban Gioc Waterfall overview
The Ban Gioc waterfall includes the high mountain peaks, the murmur of the Quay Son River, green rice fields and forest all around, narrow roads, and almost no traffic at all, and peacefulness is located in Cao Bang Province in northern Vietnam.
The falls are 30 meters high but 300 meters wide, making Ban Gioc the country’s widest waterfall, the largest natural waterfall in Southeast Asia, and one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world.
Best time to visit Ban Gioc Waterfall
Ban Gioc Waterfall is open all year, with average temperatures ranging from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius and scenery that changes seasonally. In the spring, the flame-red blossoms are in full bloom. In the autumn, the surroundings turn into a golden carpet. The waters become stronger and more violent in the summer and fall slowly in the winter.
However, September and October are still the best months to visit this waterfall because the fall colors are spectacular, as are the paddy fields during the golden harvest season.
How to travel to Ban Gioc Waterfall?
It is approximately 330 kilometers from Hanoi to Cao Bang, and the best way to get there is by private transfer or local bus (buses to Cao Bang from Hanoi depart from My Dinh Bus Station). For adventurous travelers, riding a motorcycle to Cao Bang is also a good option.
Things to do in Ban Gioc Waterfall
Get a closer look at the falls by rafting!
Experience the rafts that will transport you to the base of the waterfall, where you will undoubtedly get wet. You can also high-five Chinese tourists on the other side. The Vietnamese bamboo rafts are blue, while the Chinese rafts are green.
Climb up the sides of the waterfall for a better view, but be careful because the path is steep and slippery during heavy flow.
Keep track of the time! There is a good chance that the clock and timezone on your phone will change. Keep that in mind if you’re taking the bus back because you don’t want to miss it!
Bring your passport! Because the waterfall and the surrounding area are on the Chinese border, you should keep your passport with you at all times. We were never asked to show our passports during our stay, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.
To have the best experience, we highly recommend staying in a homestay in this area.
