Hai Phong Opera House overview
The French built the Hai Phong Opera House in 1904 and finished it in 1912. It is based on an old market in the ancient village of An Bien.
According to the French government’s plan at the time, the Opera House was considered in the center of Hai Phong City, where foreigners, Chinese, and Vietnamese congregated.
Opera House’s features
The Opera House was designed in the same style as the Paris Theater and was inspired by the architecture of French medieval theaters in the Baroc style. This is the type of art that first appeared in Italy, then spread to Austria, Spain, and a portion of France, and it became the dominant art trend from the late 16th century to the early 18th century.
Although the materials for the Opera House were imported from France, the structure was constructed by Vietnamese workers under the supervision of French architects.
There are two floors, 100 doors, and windows, a balcony, a canteen, and 400 seats on the main stage at the Opera House. This opera house serves as a hub for French and local political and cultural activities during the French occupation.
Nowadays, the Opera House serves as a venue for important festivals, special cultural activities, and important events, particularly when the residents of the city celebrate the New Year.
The Opera House is also a historical relic, dating back to when the Hai Phong people were fighting French dominance. The Opera House is one of Vietnam’s few remaining French-built theaters.
Despite numerous repairs, this Opera House has retained its original design. This is a one-of-a-kind and impressive art architectural structure that draws a large number of tourists to Hai Phong.
How to travel to the Opera House?
