Activities:

You will be met and transferred to your hotel upon arrival at Luang Prabang International Airport. After you’ve had time to rest and refresh, we’ll head out on bicycles to see some of Luang Prabang’s highlights, including a visit to the Royal Palace Museum, which houses a variety of interesting artifacts from the Royal period in Luang Prabang. We continue cycling past the city’s oldest temples, including the magnificent Wat Xiengthong, whose roof sweeps low to the ground and represents classical Lao architecture, the impressive stupa of Wat Visoun, and the shrine of Wat Aham.

Activities:

We begin the day by going to the Big Brother Mouse store in town to pick out some children’s books for our village visit. We then drive north on Route 13 before turning left onto an unpaved road to Ban Khia Luang. You will have plenty of time here to visit the school, play with the children, and watch them enjoy their new books. You will also see village women weaving on looms and visit a local temple. We can have a Western picnic lunch or a traditional Lao meal of sticky rice, leap, and fresh vegetables cooked by the villagers for lunch. We leave the village and drive to Ban Khoklin, passing through beautiful mountain scenery and paddy fields. We board a private boat in Ban Khoklin and travel down the Nam Ou River for 30 minutes to the Pak Ou Caves. These caves are an ancient pilgrimage site with thousands of gold lacquered Buddha images that have been left there for hundreds of years. We will return to Luang Prabang by late afternoon if we continue down the Mekong River. Luang Prabang overnight

Day 3:

Luang Prabang - Khuang Si Waterfall

Activities:

We start our journey to Kuang Sii Waterfall after breakfast, stopping along the way to visit the morning Phousi Market, where all the locals of Luang Prabang come to do their daily shopping. Among the chickens, fish, vegetables, and fruit are a variety of local foods and products such as dried buffalo skin, local tea, and saltpeter, as well as everything needed for daily life in Laos. When you arrive at Kuang Sii Falls, you can cool off with a refreshing swim in the topaz pools below the falls, walk along the forest trails, and visit the Bear Sanctuary. When you return to Luang Prabang, you have the afternoon free to explore or relax at the hotel.

Luang Prabang – Fly to Vientiane (a 45min flight) – Half Day City Tour

Activities:

This morning, you will be driven to the airport for your flight to Vientiane, where you will be met and transferred to your hotel. The city tour this afternoon takes you to the major temples of Vientiane, including the oldest, Wat Sisaket, with its thousands of miniature Buddha statues, and Wat Prakeo, the former royal temple that housed the famous Emerald Buddha Image. We also visit That Luang Stupa, Laos’ national icon, and stop along the way to photograph the imposing Patuxay Monument, Vientiane’s own Arc de Triumph. Your evening is free to explore the city, walk along the waterfront, or unwind at the hotel.

Vientiane – Pakse – Tad Lo

Activities:

You have an early flight to Pakse this morning. We leave Pakse for the refreshing mountain climate of the Bolivian Plateau. We will visit two of the best waterfalls in the area, Tad Fan, with its impressive twin falls cascading over 100 meters to the valley floor below, and Tad Ngeuan, with its pristine pools for a refreshing dip, and coffee shop and plantation where you can sample some real Lao coffee. Before arriving at Tad Lo, home to another scenic waterfall and numerous ethnic minority groups, you will see the region’s rich soils being cultivated for coffee, tea, cardamom, bananas, and other crops. We visit the villages of Alak, Nge, and Katu before back to Tad Lo.

Tad Lo – Wat Phou – 4000 Islands

Activities:

Following an early breakfast, we descend the mountains towards Champasak and the 4000 islands area. After passing through Pakse, we take a ferry across the Mekong River to the fascinating pre-Angkorian ruins of Wat Phu, one of Southeast Asia’s most dramatically located mountaintop temples. After lunch, we continue our journey by car and long tail boat to the 4000 Islands, where you can spend the rest of the day relaxing.

Activities:

We leave early in the morning for Done Khone by road and boat. We retrace the island’s French colonial past at Ban Khone, which still has old colonial houses and a glimpse of the first Lao railway with its own locomotive. We continue our exploration of the area by boat, stopping at the lovely Liphi waterfall, also known as the Samphamith, which serves as a natural border between Laos and Cambodia. We return to Ban Nakasang and drive to Khone Phapeng, the largest waterfall in South East Asia and dubbed the “Niagara of the East.”
