Temple of Literature Hanoi overview
Temple of Literature Hanoi is the country’s first historical and cultural architecture complex. The Kinh Ly Nhan Tong granted permission for the construction of the Royal College in 1076, with the intention of serving as Vietnam’s first university, this architecture is behind the Temple of Literature.
Until 1232, when the Temple of Literature Hanoi was expanded and selected locals and persons who learned well to take part in the exams here, this university was only used for princes, royals, and gentlemen.
The Temple of Literature Hanoi architecture complex covers an area of approximately 54331m2. In front of it, there is now a large lake known as Van Chuong Lake, the old name was Thai Ho. This lake appears like a mirror, and surrounds it with a variety of large trees, so tourists who walk into this lake for the first time will feel very cool and comfortable.
Top 5 attractions in the Temple of Literature Hanoi
The Temple of Literature’s main gate is built in the Tam Quan style, with three ancient Chinese characters reading “Temple of Literature” Van Mieu’s walls are made of bricks. Inside, there are also dividing walls that divide the space into five zones, each with its own set of walls and gates.
1. Dai Trung Mon – The First Zone
Starting with the Temple of Literature’s main gate and continuing to the gate of Dai Trung Mon, the two sides have small gates of Thanh Duc Mon and Dat Tai Mon.
2. The Second Area – Khue Van Cac
Between Dai Trung Mon and Khue Van. The architectural works of Khue Van are not massive, but they are harmonious and beautiful. The architecture is made up of four square pillars (85cm x 85cm) that support the upper floor and are made of beautiful wooden structures.
There are four round doors, a railing, and simple wooden roof supporters on the second floor. An 8-roofed building, the roof edge, and the flat roof surface are all formed by double-layer tiled roofs.
3. The Third Zone – Dr. and Thien Quang’s Steles Well
Thien Quang Tinh lake is present, and it is square in shape. The stele area for doctors is located on both sides of the lake. Each stele is made of stone and has the names of the poets who passed through Trang Nguyen, Bang Nhan, Tham Hoa, Hoang Giap, and Tien Si engraved on it. The gravestone rests on the back of a rock turtle. There are still 82 steelers from the 1442 to 1779 examinations. These are the monument’s most valuable relics.
4. Dai Bai Duong is the fourth area.
This is the Temple of Literature’s central area, and the main architecture consists of two large works arranged parallel and successively. Bai Duong is the outer building, and Thuong Cung is the inner court. This is the Confucius and Tu Phoi shrine area (Nhan Tu, Tang Tu, Tu Tu, Manh Tu).
5. Den Khai Thanh is the fifth region
This is the Thai Hoc structure. The Quoc Tu Giam school in Hanoi closed down during the Nguyen Dynasty. The Thai Hoc structure was transformed into Khai Thanh’s house, which worshiped Confucius’ father and mother. This structure, however, was destroyed during the anti-French resistance war.
