The One Pillar Pagoda overview
The One Pillar Pagoda, also known as the Dien Huu Pagoda, was built in 1049 by King Ly Thai Tong. According to legend, when King Ly Thai Tong was old, he still did not have a son, so he frequently went to pagodas to pray for one. One night, he dreamed of Bodhisattva of Mercy, who appeared in a lotus in the square lake to the west of Thang Long citadel, holding a boy and giving it to King Ly Thai Tong. The queen then had a son, and King Ly Thai Tong decided to build the One Pillar Pagoda based on the image he saw in his dream to pray to the Bodhisattva of Mercy.
According to legend, this special pagoda was built in 1049 and repaired in 1105. This is a creative architectural project that includes stone sculpture, painting, the water face as a cultural symbol, and unique art…One Pillar Pagoda was destroyed and rebuilt on a smaller scale than before. This is a truly unique architectural complex.
Every day, a large number of domestic and foreign tourists arrive to pray and visit One Pillar Pagoda. This unique pagoda was chosen as a symbol of Hanoi’s capital. The One Pillar Pagoda is located in the Ho Chi Minh Complex where you can visit many other famous attractions nearby such as the Ho Chi Minh Stilt House, Ho Chi Minh Museum, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Tran Quoc Pagoda, Temple of Literature, and so on.
