Highlights of the Khmer Apsara Dance Show
Apsaras Dance, also known as Apsara Dance, is a classical Khmer performance art influenced by Hindu and Buddhist mythology’s water and cloud spirits.
Apsaras can be found in bas-reliefs on the walls of the Angkor temples at Siem Reap. Dancers wear traditional tight-fitting gowns, extravagant headdresses, and golden jewelry.
While the dance dates back to the sixth and seventh centuries, the presentations you’re likely to see in Siem Reap are modern remakes. The Royal Ballet of Cambodia originated the ballet-like performance in the mid-20th century.
The beautiful movements and postures are based on those seen on the walls of Angkor Wat and other ancient structures in the vicinity.
You should not miss seeing this show when you are in Cambodia because it will play an important part in making your trip to the country more complete and enjoyable.
If you visit Angkor Wat, you will see many carvings depicting this dance that is unique to the Khmer people and is very mystical.
The Apsara Theatre & Restaurant which displays the show very interesting, is located in Wat Bo Village and is part of the Angkor Village Hotel. Step inside and you’ll find yourself in an opulent air-conditioned theatrical environment, with tables arranged low in front of the stage where you can dine cross-legged on cushions.
Traditional Khmer dancing acts are given on stage, together with Khmer set dinners. Each exquisite hand gesture and the backstories behind each complex performance are explained in souvenir booklets.
