Bakong Temple overview
Bakong Temple is located 13 kilometers from Siem Riep City’s core, in the Angkor relic area. It was founded in the ninth century by King Indravarman I and is one of the three most significant monuments in Hariharalaya ancient city (now known as the Roluos Group).
Bakong Temple, located away from the hustle and bustle of the city, easily provides guests with a pleasant environment in contrast to urban areas.
Bakong was the first ancient structure constructed in Siem Riep. The temple is surrounded by a sandstone wall that is around 900m long by 700m broad.
The core part consists of five stories, with the highest stupa on the fifth (15 meters), there are twelve smaller stupas surrounding this one. Bakong, like Angkor Wat, has a moat around the temple to protect it during battle.
Bakong Temple’s features
Bakong Temple’s structure is similar to a stepped pyramid, known as the temple mountain in early Khmer architecture. The similarities between the Bakong and Borobudur temples in Java suggest that Borobudur was the template for Bakong.
Built on a towering stone platform and separated into many sections, the temple will certainly teach visitors about the benefits of excellent historical architecture. If you look closely, you will realize that it is meticulously constructed. Each bas-relief is delicate, visually appealing, and greatly influenced by Cambodian architectural forms.
The central stupa is located at the highest peak. To get there, tourists must pass by the Buddha statues and then climb the tall steps. Bakong Shrine appears lovely and old from a distance, yet few people dare to climb the steps and visit it.
Today, just the temple’s foundation and major structure remain standing. The remaining objects are primarily damaged and broken. The temple’s pristine and mysterious charm originates from its long history and green moss-covered rocks.
Many people are unfamiliar with the Bakong Temple. However, if tourists are aware of its existence and attraction, they will want to get there right away. Because few people visit here, those who do will be able to appreciate Cambodia’s unique architectural space, as well as the peace and fresh air. Walking around this location, each person appears to reconnect with old memories and massive losses in Cambodian history.
Bakong Temple is also related to ancient myths, thus visitors can learn about Cambodian historical legends. This is an opportunity for you to obtain new travel experiences while also learning more about a country’s rich history.
Why visit Bakong Temple?
Bakong, one of Siem Riep City’s major temples, attracts few visitors due to its distance from the city center. However, this does not reduce the temple’s attractiveness to visitors. If you adore the historic magnificence of the Angkor Temples, Bakong is a must-see location. In some ways, visiting Bakong Temple is a magnificent adventure that allows us to relax from the strains of everyday life. So, why don’t we plan a visit to this old temple as soon as possible?
