Coming to Ninh Binh Province, tourists will have many opportunities to discover the vast land of mountains and beautiful nature. Besides, Ninh Binh seems to bring us back to Vietnam in the early stage of building the country through visiting the former capital with great pride. One of the most famous destinations here is Dinh Temple which is outstanding with the majesty and antiquity. This temple, in a way, exists as a witness of history in the land of the ancient capital (Hoa Lu).

Dinh Temple is located in a 5 hectare campus, belonging to the relic complex of Hoa Lu former capital in Truong Yen Commune, Hoa Lu District, Ninh Binh Province. It was constructed in the 17th century, being a unique architecture of wood and stone carvings. It is built by Hoa Lu people to worship and memorize the contributions of the King Dinh Tien Hoang, who founded the first feudal state in Vietnam.

The history of Dinh Temple

According to the legend, the temple is built in Hoa Lu, the former capital of Vietnam. This is a prime land surrounded by Sao Khe River, Ma Yen Mountain in front and Long Trieu Mountain Range at the back. Dinh Temple comprises 3 main buildings: the worshipping place, the incense burning room and the most important one – the place where the King Dinh Tien Hoang and his three sons are worshiped. This is the typical architecture normally seen in temples of Vietnam.

However, the structure having the most prominent features is the worshipping place. The art of sculpture here has reached the level of virtuosity. Folk artists have combined between embossing and intaglio – the most effective way of sculpturing. Now here are there 12 ironwood pillars with the diameter of about 0.5m placed on huge stones. This is also the place where items are display to memorize the contributions of the King Dinh Tien Hoang.

The next one is the place to worship mandarins of Dinh Dynasty and the third one is to worship the statue of the King Dinh Tien Hoang and his sons. The outstanding feature here is planks with elaborately carved dragon motifs. The excellent carving technique of artists makes us feel that dragons seem to be flying in the cloud. It is no exaggeration to say that this structure looks like a mini palace.

Nearby, tourists can visit the Tomb of King Dinh Tien Hoang, which is located on Ma Yen Mountain, in front of this temple. To reach here, travelers have to pass 150 stone steps.

The architecture of Dinh Temple

Lying amidst old trees, orchards and bonsai, Dinh Temple becomes more majestic and monumental. With the unique architecture, especially the art of wood carving of Vietnamese folk artists, Dinh Temple is really an outstanding artwork. Valuable antiquities are preserved here like bricks used for building the palace or the Buddhist scripture pillar engraved with the Sanskrit…In terms of the national culture, Dinh Temple is an important relic belonging to the special protection area of Hoa Lu former capital complex. This temple is also the only place to worship the King Dinh Tien Hoang’s family and mandarins of Dinh Dynasty simultaneously. Along with Le Temple, it has been ranked on the list of “Top 100 famous one-hundred-year structures in Vietnam”. In addition, like other relics in Hoa Lu, it also belongs to Trang An – the World Heritage Complex recognized by UNESCO in 2014.

No doubt Dinh Temple has contributed a lot to the tourism potentials of Ninh Binh. Setting foot on here, visitors have a chance to not only learn more about Vietnam history but also enjoy the typical architecture of Vietnam in previous centuries. Enjoy and have fun with your trip!
