Bich Dong is a famous and beautiful cave in Vietnam, located in Ninh Binh Province; if you visit northern Vietnam, you should not miss this site. The typical itinerary for tourists spending a full day in Ninh Binh is Hoa Lu (the ancient capital), Tam Coc (three caves), and Bich Dong, which is known as “Halong Bay on Land” due to its beauty and uniqueness. Before exploring Bich Dong Cave, you should first visit Bich Dong Pagoda, which is located in Bich Dong Mountain, which contains Bich Dong Cave. Bich Dong Pagoda was built in 1428 by King Le Thai To, and it was also the most famous site in Ninh Binh at the time. Bich Dong Pagoda is divided into three parts (three pagodas), which are located on the mountainside and are known as Ha Pagoda, Trung Pagoda, and Thuong Pagoda. Bich Dong means “green cave,” and it was named by Prime Minister Nguyen Nghiem, the father of great poet Nguyen Du. The name Bich Dong has been in use since 1773.

After visiting Bich Dong Pagoda, tourists climb twenty-one steps to Toi Cave (Dark Cave), which contains many different and beautiful images such as fairies, dragons, tortoises, elephants, tigers, and so on. To reach Thuong Pagoda, tourists must climb approximately forty steps to the mountainside; this pagoda is located at the highest point near Bich Dong Mountain. The courtyard of Thuong Pagoda is the best place to get a bird’s-eye view of Bich Dong; there are mountain ranges and river branches mixed together to create a beautiful picture of this area.

Exploring Tam Coc and Bich Dong Caves is enhanced by a boat trip along a small river; this is a unique type of boat; it is a small wooden boat that is rowed by a local; sometimes you can row it yourself; it is very fun and interesting.
