Xieng Khouang overview

Xieng Khouang, a province in Laos, is located approximately 435 kilometers from Vientiane. The area was nearly decimated during the battle against the Americans but has since been rebuilt after 1975.

Because of its strategic importance, Xieng Khouang was brutally shelled and subjected to intense ground fighting during Laos’ Second Indochina War in the 1960s and early 1970s.

This combat left a deadly path of unexploded ordnance, which is still being removed today. Following years of conflict, Xiengkhouang and the Plain of Jars have experienced peace and tranquility since Laos gained complete independence in 1975.

Attractions in Xieng Khouang

Xieng Khouang is home to the famed Phou Bia Mountain, which stands at 2.820 meters and is Laos’ highest point. It is difficult to get to this peak, however, Phou Bia Peak is quite beautiful, with many valleys and trees that create a majestic and lyrical image.

Xieng Khouang is well-known for its Plain of Jars, which contains a large number of jars dispersed around the area. The Plain of Jars was the location of the majority of fatal weaponry used in the previous war against the Americans.

The highland landscape resembles the moon since there are several artificial ponds and lakes of varying sizes. Nowadays, approximately 50 people are killed or injured each year as a result of unexploded explosives.
