Luang Prabang is very famous for its ancient capital, which is located along the Mekong River and is a UNESCO cultural heritage site in Laos. This ancient city is unlike any other one in the world, with its winding streets and sparkling lanterns at night.

Best time to visit Luang Prabang

The dry season, from November to February, is the best time to visit Luang Prabang, with temperatures ranging from 15 to 30 degrees Celsius.

River travel is best between November and January when the Mekong River has sufficient water levels to allow easy passage along Laos’ waterway. From March to July, the temperature ranges from 25 to 35 degrees.

How to travel to Luang Prabang?

Luang Prabang international airport (LPQ) is only about 4 kilometers from the city center, so taking a private transfer/taxi is simple and inexpensive, or you can experience it by tuk-tuk, a popular vehicle of locals in Laos for this short route.

The bus ride from Vientiane (Laos’ capital) to Luang Prabang takes approximately 10hrs, while the flight takes 1hr. It takes a 1hr flight from Hanoi, Vietnam, a 2hrs15min flight from Siem Reap, Cambodia, and a 1hr 15min flight from Bangkok, Thailand.

Crossing the border in Thailand from Chiang Khong to Huay Xai and taking a boat up or down the Mekong through spectacular and scenic countryside is one of the most delightful and popular ways to get to Luang Prabang. The slow boat trip will take two days, with an overnight stop in Pakbeng.
