The Kingdom of Cambodia is often mentioned with world-renowned landmarks like Angkor Complex with ancient temples in Siem Riep or Phnom Penh. Almost all tourists coming to the country of temples cannot overlook noisy and crowded places which is always full of visitors. But you can choose a different beginning for your journey with the discovery of Cambodian traditional culture. And I will recommend you to visit an ideal place: Bakong Temple in Siem Riep.

Bakong Temple is located in the relic area Angkor (Siem Riep City), 13km from the central city. It was officially built in the 9th century under the reign of King Indravarman I, being one of three most important relics of Hariharalaya ancient city (or called Roluos Group now). Far away from the bustling city, Bakong Temple easily brings tourists the pleasant atmosphere, unlike the hustle of urban areas.

Bakong is the first ancient architecture constructed in Siem Riep. The whole temple is surrounded by a sandstone wall which is about 900m long and 700m wide. The central part comprises 5 storeys with the highest stupa in the fifth storey (15m). There are 12 smaller stupas surrounding this stupa. Like Angkor Wat, Bakong also has a moat surrounding the temple to protect this structure at war time.

The structure of Bakong Temple is similar to the shape of a stepped pyramid, identified as the temple mountain of early Khmer temple architecture. The striking similarity of the Bakong and Borobudur temple in Java shows that Borobudur was served as the prototype of Bakong. Built on the high stone platform and divided into many areas, the temple will certainly bring travelers an insight into values of a great historical architecture. Observing carefully, you will see that it is elaborately constructed. Each of bas-reliefs is delicate, eye-catching and strongly affected by the imprint of Cambodian architecture.

The central stupa is placed on the highest location. To reach it, tourists have to pass outside Buddha statues and then climb to the high steps. From a distance, Bakong Temple looks great and historical and not many people are courageous enough to overcome steps and visit the temple. Nowadays, the temple maintains only the foundation and the main part. The remainders are mostly damaged and broken. The long history and rocks covered with green moss create the pristine and mysterious beauty for the temple.

Actually, for many individuals, Bakong Temple is unknown. But once tourists know its existence and attractiveness, they will have a desire to discover it immediately. Since few people come here, those who visit it will have the opportunity to enjoy a separate architectural space of Cambodia along with quiet and fresh air. Wandering around this area, each person seems to return to ancient memories and tremendous losses of Cambodia history.

This temple is also attached to ancient stories, so visiting Bakong Temple, you can listen to historical legends of Cambodian. That’s is a chance for you not only to have new travel experiences but also learn more about the heroic history of a country.

Being one of the biggest temples in Siem Riep City, Bakong is still known by not many visitors as it is dozens of kilometers from the central city. But that doesn’t mean this temple loses its appeal to travelers. If you love the ancient beauty of Angkor Temples, Bakong is surely a must-see place. The discovery of Bakong Temple, in a way, is a wonderful trip and an occasion for us to dispel the tension of daily life. So why don’t we plan for a visit to this ancient temple as soon as possible?
